On 29 June 2024, the „International Workshop INSULAR SOUTHEAST ASIA“ took place on the premises of the Institute of Cultural and Social Anthropology at the University of Vienna (NIG). In the morning, young researchers presented their research projects in short presentations. In the subsequent Q & A phases, participants were able to ask questions to the speakers. The variety of topics and the interdisciplinary nature of the projects presented were impressive.
In the afternoon, representatives of the Austrian-Indonesian, Austrian-Malaysian and Austro-Philippine Society took advantage of the opportunity granted by the workshop organisers to present their respective bilateral friendship societies to the audience. The Austro-Philippine Society was represented by its Secretary General Siegfried Höfinger.
After a brief introduction about the origins of the Austro-Philippine Society, the speaker explained the current project, the awarding of the Ferdinand Blumentritt Medal to the first prizewinner, Prof Dietrich Harth, as part of the Rizal-Blumentritt Symposium 2023. In the subsequent working groups, future prospects for further research cooperation were discussed.
